1-Sealed Vs Unsealed:
Sealed (Integrated) and unsealed bearings are two options for headsets on BMX bikes. Sealed bearings are enclosed in a protective casing, shielding them from dirt, water, and debris. This design significantly extends their lifespan and maintains smoother operation. Unsealed bearings, typically found on cheaper/older bikes, are more exposed to the elements, requiring frequent cleaning and replacement.
Sealed bearings are the superior choice for BMX due to their durability, reliability, reduced maintenance needs, and consistent performance in various conditions. They offer better protection against harsh riding environments, ensuring longer-lasting, trouble-free operation for all types of BMX riding.
We always recommend paying that little bit more for bikes that come with sealed bearings.
2-Freestyle BMX Headsets:
Freestyle BMX headsets come in 2 Sizes: 1 Inch & 1-1/8 Inch.
Freestyle BMX Headsets come in 3 Styles: Integrated, Push-In, and Conversion.
Integrated Headsets are the industry standard for freestyle BMX. The are a sealed bearing and provide excellent durability and reliability.
Push-In Headsets are typically found on cheaper and Older Bikes, these can be either sealed or un-sealed with un-sealed found most commonly on cheaper bikes.
Conversion Headsets are used for converting a Push-In Headset to an Integrated headset.
Nearly all modern aftermarket 20 Inch Freestyle BMX frames and forks will use 1-1/8 Inch Integrated Headsets.
